Commercialization plays an ever growing role in the life of a sportsman. 


A professional sportsman today is often a media personality as well. The use of his/her picture may be of great commercial value to companies and other entities. It is generally accepted that part of the profits should benefit the sportsman him/herself. The sportsman is not just an athlete, whose activities enhance people’s lives, but a brand name as well. A brand, which dependent on the popularity of the sportsman, may generate a source of income. 


The commercial sport life of an athlete is of a relative short duration. For example from 18 to 35 years. The brand the sportsman created may have a longer life, however. This is dependent on the successes of the sportsman, his/her personality and the way the brand interests have been managed during and after the career of the sportsman.
